Smol Nozomi [HD REMASTERED] by SynergicStar

The Contest:

Remake the image above, into anything you want!

Or, create an image in its style.

I'm posting this to address some FAQs I get about the contest,

and ones that people might hypothetically ask me, while clarifying its rules.

Here are links to the contest itself:

Generation 2 of this contest is finally here, and submissions are being added!

And for more information on how this

Question #1:

"Who/What inspired you to make this contest?"

My answer: Three Deviants deserve credit for inspiring me to make this contest, even if none of them directly worked with me in creating it:

Triple-Q

As far as I know, Triple-Q ( triple-q.deviantart.com/ ) is the creator of Smol Nozomi.

SynergicStar

Magic277 ( magic277.deviantart.com/ ) reuploaded Triple-Q's Smol Nozomi in HD,

as well as variations on the image:

mijukudreams

Anyakoku ( anyakoku.deviantart.com/ ) made some Smol images of her own:

Question #3:

"Can I submit images in the smol style, that aren't directly based on Smol Nozomi?"

My answer: Yes.

Here are some good examples of images that use this style, but aren't directly taking assets from Smol Nozomi, which TheFadedFrost (thebluerenegade.deviantart.com…) made (These aren't entries to the contest, BTW; I just use them as examples):

Question #4:

"Can I submit more than one image to the contest?"

My answerYes.

Question #5:

"If so, can I remake images to address your feedback, and submit them?"

My answer: Yes.

Question #6:

"Are there any restrictions on what I can use to make contest entries?"

My answer: No.

As long as the image matches the smol style and is your own work, it can be submitted. It can be made using anything!

Here are some good examples of entries that aren't traditional digital drawings:

(Hand-drawn)

Nyanzomi by Somethingawesome9001Smol Nozomi: Big the Cat Edition by weegeeguy01

(3-D model)

Smol Nozomi remake for the contest...or fun by MichaelJordy

(Pixel art)

But even if you don't use either of those 3 formats, like I said before, it's okay!

Thinking outside the box about how to make these images is great, and will probably get yours a better ranking in the contest, purely for its originality.

If you want some ideas of strange formats that you could make your entries with

(I'm not saying that people would do these, but that if you wanted to, I'd be very interested in seeing them), then:

Entries made using 3-D rendering software, preferrably with some way to view them from all angles,

entries that are physical objects (ex: origami, sculptures, pottery, made from blocks/Legos, etc.),

and entries that are animated (perhaps as .gif files or videos) would all be very interesting submissions.

Question #7:

"Can I use smol images that were made before the contest started?"

My answer: It depends on a few things, all of which must be true.

1. Was your image made recently (Made no earlier than November 18, 2016 - a week before the contest started)?

And when I say 'made', I mean submitted to DeviantArt.

So if you started work on a smol image on November 17, 2016 or earlier, but didn't upload it, you're still allowed to submit it.

The only reason I have this rule is to prevent already-seen images from taking up the contest's space, so we all see something new.

As a result, I don't care if you started work on an image before 11/18/2016;

as along as that image wasn't submitted to DeviantArt before that date, it's fine with me.

2. Is the image your own work?

I've seen plenty of smol images made by Triple-Q, that were never uploaded to DeviantArt. So if someone uploads "Smol Haruka" (in some form) (by Triple-Q)

or "Smol μ's" (by Triple-Q)

or something else made by another person, then I won't count it as a submission into the contest.

Question #8:

"Will you submit any smols of your own to the contest?"

My answer: No.

I want this to be a contest for all of us, not just myself.

How am I supposed to fairly judge images that I've made? I could try, but it would likely be hard.

I will make use of my smols for things related to the contest (such as promotional videos, and examples for other artists to follow),

but none of them will be entries into the contest.

Question #9:

"When will the contest end?"

(For effect, play this high-quality mashup while reading)

My answer: It's complicated.

There's no planned ending date for the contest.

I'm not even sure if there should be one; I don't want people to rush their submissions, or discover the contest much later on, and plan to enter, only to find it defunct. But at the same time, contest ending dates can give a satisfying conclusion to everyone's hard work, and encourage artists to work on their entries soon, so they can make it in. And if artists submit something to the contest months after interest in it has dropped off, that sort of defeats the purpose of giving them recognition.

I think a compromise would work instead: I'll make the contest in "Generations",

(because like with biological generations, the contest will evolve between them)

where each Generation has a certain number of possible entries. In Gen 1's case, it will have 40 entries (at the time of writing, 27 have been added).

All entries in a Generation will be unique to it (so they can't be repeated between Generations).

Once that number has been surpassed, a new Generation will begin, and rankings from the previous one will be finalized.

At the same time, a "Best of" compilation will be made, taking all submissions from every existing Generation, and putting them into one huge ranking list.

I'll make as many of these Generations as I want, which will probably go on for a long time.

Special awards could go to each entry, such as

"Best Non-Nozomi Smol" (for images made in the smol style, but not directly based on Smol Nozomi),

"Master of Feedback" (for the artist that does the best job of responding to feedback, and adapting their image accordingly),

"Biggest Improvement" (for the artist whose images improved the most from the last Generation they entered),

and "Best Non-Digital Art" (for the best image made without using digital tools).

Keep in mind, that these are only examples of awards I could give; their names might change in the final versions of these posts, or they may have no equivalents in them.

These awards are the reason that Gen 1 will still get one of these compilations, since it won't just be repitition.

"But why use such an arcane system? Why not have a simple ending, or just never end the contest at all?"

Because of what I mentioned before - the flaws with doing either of these systems.

By using my system, you avoid losing potential candidates, since there's always another Generation to enter, and thus people don't rush their submissions as much.

And by regularly uploading new Generations, I avoid the problem of people losing interest in the contest, and thus not making new entries.

I've loved the experience of running this contest, and want to continue it for as long as I can.

And this is hopefully the system that makes the most sense within that ambition - one where the contest goes on as long as I want it to, and people can get the attention needed for good feedback.

I hope then, that these decisions make sense to you.

Accepting your smols until the bell tolls,

Born and raised there, NoneOf Your Business (played by Will Smith) spent most of his days on the virtual playground -chillin' out, relaxing, acting all cool, and posting some images to DeviantArt, one of which was called "Top Kek". I show you,

how to make good use of MS Paint's limited tools.
I requested that someone use the trick I explained in this video,
for their entry into my Smol Nozomi Remake Contest:

However, they weren't sure of how to do it, so I explained it in video form.

The reason it took so long was that the TTS program had to load each line before saying it.
[CONTEST] Smol Nozomi Remakes (One Smol Step...)
So far, my Smol Nozomi Remake Contest has been an incredible experience;
the artwork I've seen, while looking for people who might be interested in it, what they've submitted to the contest, and the amount of time that I've committed into managing it are already far beyond what I expected, and in a good way.
And I'm only 5 days into this extensive project, that I intend to keep running for much longer.
Here are all of the Journal entries I've made so far, regarding the contest - think of it as a measure of how far it has come in its first 5 days, and how much further it can go:

My expectations have been shattered; with over 12 distinct entries to the contest, and several more on the way, this project has already grown massive, but is merely a smol taste of what's to come. Here are some of those submissions:

Other stuff regarding the contest:

Many would credit Triple-Q with the creation of Smol Nozomi.
But I think we may have found its true origins,
which predate both Triple-Q's existence and Love Live - where Nozomi, the image's character, comes from.
